Beyond vegan: Why claim-based labels are not enough, and what comes next

COSMOS discusses at InCosmetics Asia how brands can future-proof themselves in global markets.

EU Directive 2024/825 (EmpCo) is now in force. It requires that every sustainability claim be specific, substantiated, and independently verified. The implications for brands both in Europe and exporting to Europe are real, and they are immediate.

This is not a theoretical debate. COSMOS-certified products are already active across most of Asian markets, with 1,640 finished products, 3,846 raw materials, 577 company-market presences. The infrastructure is here. The question is whether the claims being made around it are solid enough to withstand scrutiny.

As regulatory frameworks shift from voluntary promises to legally binding requirements, rely-on-trust marketing is officially winding down. Green claims without third-party backing risk non-compliance, heavy fines, and severe brand damage.

COSMOS provides the transparent, audited proof of origin, processing, and environmental impact that the EU directive demands, giving brands a future-proof shield in global markets.

Laurent Milet, COSMOS-standard General Manager, will be discussing this in detail at InCosmetics Asia in Bangkok in November. Whether you’re looking to safeguard your current portfolio or build your next generation of sustainable products with confidence, come connect with our team.
